AMD's SB850 Chipset Specifications Leaked Slated for Q4 2009 release

Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices is expected to update its desktop computer platform with the release of the highly anticipated RD890 chipset, accompanied by the southbridge chip SB850. The details on these two products have been scarce but, thanks to a recently leaked roadmap of AMD's future products, we now have a more general idea of what to expect from the upcoming platform, which is slated to become available sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. Additionally, the leaked roadmap also details some of AMD's other future products, including the 785G chipset, a
refresh to the current 780G.

According to a recent news-article on the English version of Expreview.com, Intel's main competitor in the market of x86 processors and computer platforms will soon be updating its product portfolio with the addition of the highly anticipated RD890 northbridge and the SB850 southbridge. The roadmap details some of the technical specifications of the upcoming southbridge, which will include support for the next-generation SATA 3 6GB/s interface, RAID 5 and 14 USB ports. In addition, the RS880D chipset will include the graphics capabilities of the Radeon HD 3400, featuring a core speed of 700Mhz, support for DirectX 10.1, UVD2.0 and Hybrid CrossFireX.

Before the release of this high-performance product, AMD will announce the new AMD 785G mainstream chipset, the last of the company's 7-series IGP chipsets. This is a product that shares its specifications with the current 780G northbridge, offering a 500MHz core speed, DX10, UVD, HDMI and PCIe Express 2.0 support. However, the 785G will introduce the support for DirectX 10.1 and UVD2.0, when it will launch at the beginning of the third quarter.

These new products will join AMD's current lineup and coexist all through the end of this year and the beginning of 2010. They will also come as a much awaited addition to AMD's latest Phenom II processors leveraging the company's first 45nm process technology.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time Hints XXXIII (DS)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, or Pokemon Fushigi no Danjon Toki no Tankentai, is a video game developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS by Chunsoft and published by Nintendo. It was paired up with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, which was made exclusively available for the Nintendo DS portable console.

This game is one of the newer entries in Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon franchise, which began on the first Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The series consists of a semi-turnbased dungeon crawling gameplay, similar to other fully-pledged titles made for various other platforms. The two versions of the game are compatible with each other thanks to the DS' dual slot features, and information can be transferred from one title to another.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time introduces a lot of changes, as opposed to the first title in the Mystery Dungeon series, which appeared on the DS, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, as it has all of the Generation IV Pokemons, sports an improved Wi-Fi feature and, most importantly, more options for the touch screen of the Nintendo DS.

Launched in Japan on September 13, 2007, and in North America and Europe the next year, on April 20 and July 4, respectively, the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time game sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Reviews were positive, as the game improved a lot of things, but kept the gameplay intact so players would feel right at home with it.

Windows 7 RC on May 5, Windows 7 Build 7082 Already Here

The fully fledged Release Candidate of Windows 7 is planned for availability on May 5, 2009. Testers should not expect Windows 7 client RC alone, as Microsoft is also set to make available Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate also on May 5. The information was provided by the Microsoft Partner Program website, and indicated that the company's partners as well as MSDN and TechNet subscribers could access the full RC bits of Windows 7 as of April 18. As far as MSDN and TechNet are concerned, I can confirm that subscribers continue to have access only to the Beta Build 7000 of Windows 7, and that the RC of the next iteration of Windows was not live at the time of this article. However, Microsoft continues to advance steadfast toward the signing-off of Windows 7 RC, and offered Build 7082 to select testers.

Microsoft Partner Program

There is no telling whether the details provided by the software giant via the Microsoft Partner Program website are in concordance with partners actually receiving the Windows 7 RC bits. As I have already said, this scenario is not valid for MSDN and TechNet, where Microsoft continues to serve Build 7000 and the associated activation product keys and downloads. Speculation indicates that some of the Redmond company's closes partners, OEMs in particular, have indeed been granted early access to Windows 7 RC. In this context, MSDN and TechNet subscribers will have to wait a tad longer, no telling just how long. As far as the public is concerned, May 5 is the day they need to look forward to.

Meanwhile, Windows 7 Build 7082 from the RC-branch was handed to testers. PCBeta is offering a few screenshots of the Chinese version of Windows 7 Build 7082. The past week, Windows 7 Build 7106, from the RTM-branch, also in Chinese, was leaked into the wild and is now available for download via torrent websites.

MSN: DiCaprio and Diaz, the Greenest Celebrities

Over 1,000 people that participated in an MSN survey focused on ecology have pointed to Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz as the greenest celebrities. Microsoft indicated that DiCaprio was a hit with female respondents, while Diaz was the top eco-celeb with male respondents. No less than 40% of the people surveyed revealed that “green” was not necessarily driven by ecological factors, but rather fueled by celebrities or the trend factor. Microsoft itself underlined that people were willing to go only so far for eco-friendliness. Data from the survey was made available just ahead of Earth Day, which
is celebrated on April 22, 2009.

“Educating one’s self is a quick and easy way for people to play a part in this year’s Earth Day,” commented Lisa Tiedt, MSN Green Expert. “MSN Green is the all-in-one source for news, information and tools that inspire people to enrich their lives and the environment — around the world and around the block.”

According to the MSN survey, no less than 70% of Americans are firmly convinced that they will never use a kitchen compost or reduce toilet flushes in order to help the environment. However, at the same time, approximately 49% of people surveyed are more than willing to go without air conditioning throughout the summer, or even to go full vegetarian for a year, in order to cut back on their carbon footprint.

“To achieve long-term sustainability, Americans are going to have to go above and beyond their traditional green routines of recycling, and work to influence policy that will open up additional recycling options and keep people from littering,” Tiedt added.

At the same time, there were over 20% of respondents who claimed to have no access to a recycling service, or not even knowing what the carbon footprint was. Overall, 46% of people revealed that recycling had to be made easier before they would consider pulling their weight, in terms of waste. And it is quite a weight, as statistics show that Americans produce the weight of the Empire State Building in trash in a single day.

With the new Services Ready, Microsoft is streamlining the planning, development and deployment of services. The program is available to Microsoft Gold Certified Partners that are building services on top of the Microsoft Platform. Services Ready comes to respond to the generalized trend to cut back on costs while enhancing performance. By slashing costs and driving efficiency, the Redmond company indicates that the current $383 billion market opportunity for Microsoft Platform-based services will explode to as much as $490 billion by 2012.

“In good economic times and bad, customers count on services partners to help them adopt, deploy and maximize the value of their Microsoft investments,” explained Maria Martinez, corporate vice president, Microsoft Services. “Services Ready goes a long way toward ensuring our customers have a consistent, high-value experience with partners who are armed with Microsoft’s own tested and proven tools.”

Launched on April 20, 2009, Services Ready is currently focused on the following areas: identity and security, virtualization, systems management, desktop platform, portals and collaboration, search, unified communications, deployment services and Customer Care Framework. The program is a collection of best practices that come accompanied with guidance and guidelines, but also templates and what the software giant referred to as field-tested engagement tools. The promise from Microsoft is that Gold Certified Partners will be able to reduce the financial investments poured into the process of introducing a new service.

Empire: Total War

One could argue that there are two significantly different periods in the history of the Total War series, as created by Creative Assembly: there are the first two games, Shogun and Medieval, where the strategic map is more of an excuse for players to get into the innovative (at that time) and beautiful tactical battles, and then there are the last three, Rome, Medieval 2 and the recently released Empire, where the tactical battles and strategic map are equally important, leading some players to even ignore the previous releases altogether, playing the entire game as some sort of period-themed empire builder.

Empire is a fine balancing act between the overall strategy and the tactical battles, with a better Artificial Intelligence than its predecessors and with a diplomatic system that works just a little better. There are some significant changes to the way the game is played and there are some good ways in which the series has progressed. If you look at Medieval 2: Total War like the high school years of the franchise, where finesse was necessary but brute force could still win the day, then Empire is where Total War really goes to college. It manages to juggle a lot more stuff, the complexity factor has been taken up and the whole philosophy behind tactical battles has been changed. Get ready to build your empire, if you can get over the lack of stability of the title and if you have the gaming machine to run this hog of a game.

Strategy

The strategic map is now much more crowded than in previous games. You have towns, which can be developed to produce wealth, create research or to improve happiness. They can be individually targeted by the enemy and are precious on their own. Each region now has a capital, which has number of building slots and, if conquered, leads to the loss of the entire region. This setup means that there are more locations to look after, which can be a bit unnerving, but Creative Assembly implemented a visual cue to show you which zone needs your attention. Also, be careful what you choose to build in those emerging towns. I would recommend universities and a few new workshops.

Going to Sankt Petersburg

On the strategic level, you can engage into diplomacy with other nations, this time without the need for a diplomat, or you can play around with the three types of agents that you have in Empire: Total War. Gentlemen are used to do research when stationed in your nations college's, which makes your military fight better, your towns produce more and your people desire to overthrow you, and can also be used to steal research from the colleges of other factions, which rarely works in my experience, and they can also enter into duels with other gentlemen and rakes to take them out of commission. Rakes are an evolution of the spy. They can assassinate, blow buildings up and spy on armies and cities. Interestingly, they rarely seem to be able to do good infiltration work but they are quite adept at sabotage and killing enemy generals (usually, just before a crucial battle). Don't forget about the fact that you also need to make good use of your religious agents, as religion is crucial in keeping conquered people in line and below revolt level. Don't forget that you can manage the tax level for each region and for the nation to make sure that you keep the population in line.

Do mind the trade and the necessity for a navy. Get those trade ships to South America and Africa to get precious resources while also using a few fleets to keep pirates and potential enemies off your trade lanes. The A.I. seems very anxious to choke your trade income when a conflict starts.

One thing that might stifle players is the scope of the game. Empire simulates three big theaters of war, North America, Europe to the steppes of Russia and North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. There are also the trade zones and the big stretches of oceans that lie between them all. The size is an advantage, as it guarantees a different experience for playing, let's say, England, then Prussia, then the Ottoman Empire, then the Maratha Confederacy.

Tactics

How much the battlefields have changed! Now, artillery is the queen of the battlefield and massed infantry is the king. A lot of people have thought that battles in the XVIII century would be boring to play and batch, but that's not the case. Players need to be a little more thoughtful in the initial deployment phase, where the use of field works is now available and where a lot of attention is required in creating formations where flanks are protected. As the battles begin, there's quite a lot going on at the same time. The Artificial Intelligence keeps going after cannon like crazy, recognizing their importance in any engagement, so make sure you keep pikemen or line infantry close to them. Also, make sure that you don't abandon all mobility by only using infantry and artillery, as cavalry, while weaker than in Rome and in Medieval 2, is in no way powerless. It's still crucial to flank regiments to break their morale and, as the technology develops, special attention must be paid to taking out cannons, as they tend to shred infantry.

Over the wall

You'll get to use the speed up controls a lot, especially if the enemy chooses to hole up and defend in one corner of the map, which tends to happen if your force is clearly superior. One good improvement is that you don't need to continue playing after you win the battle, in order to make sure that you kill all enemies. Creative Assembly has implemented a system that automatically takes into account all the routing troops that are taken down in the conflict resolution phase. The bad news is that the performance of the tactical A.I., although improved over Medieval 2, can be either challenging or abysmal, depending on reasons that I do not fully understand. The least fun battles I have fought have been those around forts (star forts are the worst) because line infantry apparently has no idea related to how to position itself on the walls (city battles are much better). The most fun battles are those that have varied scenery, with a bit of forest, some buildings and a lot of open space. There, you can truly employ some interesting tactics, including ambushes, flanking and the complex maneuvering of infantry battle lines.

And don't forget about the naval battles. They are taxing on the graphical engine but are beautiful and almost a game onto themselves. You need to aim, determine the type of munition you want to use, the distance at which to engage the enemy, take the wind into account and see whether you'd like to go for hand to hand battle against another ship. Just be aware that there's a nasty graphical bug that can “whitewash” some naval engagements.

Visuals and audio

It's easy to say that Empire: Total War looks better than any other game in the series, because it's so obvious. In the chaos of the land battles, where you're usually zoomed out to give orders and watch plans unfold, you're likely to miss the beauty of the game but you're certainly going to see it in the naval battles, where the majestic ships of the period are torn to pieces by a variety of cannonball types shot out of cannons. Even the water looks good, not in the cartoon-like Red Alert 3, but either murky or shimmering in the Sun, which makes you almost feel the breeze that can lead sailors to victory or defeat. There are also a lot of details on the warriors, on the buildings and the landscape. Just make sure that you have the gaming hardware needed to render all that detail. Otherwise, you can tone down the graphics quality, as gameplay remains as enjoyable without them.

Rout!

The sound, on the other hand, doesn't seem that great. The thunderous clashes between heavy cavalry and grenadiers seem to lack the impact factor. Cannon sounds more like carbines, and muskets from an entire line of a regiment shooting at the same time sound like a single revolver. It's subdued instead of being heroic; it's limited where it should have been awe-inspiring. Line infantry don't even seem to notice when shells fall in their ranks. There's a chance that they haven't even heard them exploding. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the sound will be modified via patches, so let's hope that modders will make the game sound like it should.

Multiplayer

At the moment, you can engage anyone in multiplayer in the tactical battles. You can choose your nation, your ground and even the timing for the battle. They're quite fun, as they offer you the chance to see how smart and fun a human opponent can be when compared to the A.I. I've even tried remaking the battles of the American Civil War with some buddies and, with a bit of modding, something really cool could be built using Empire: Total War.

But the big promise coming from Creative Assembly is that it plans to implement a true “multiplayer campaign” in which two players can go up against one another on the strategy map, as well as in tactical battles. The idea is that people would have an option to command the army of the other side in each tactical battle. The good thing is that it would really add a new layer of rivalry to a multiplayer campaign. The bad thing is that a multiplayer campaign would take a really, really long time, probably more than a solo game of Empire: Total War takes.

Another good thing is that Creative Assembly will test out the concepts of the multiplayer campaign through a beta test, which will likely be public and will be hosted by Steam. Look out for more details on that as we get them.

Conclusion

Fans of the Total War franchise and all those who have played Medieval 2 for more than a few turns will like Empire. You can actually lose battles on the Hard difficulty and you'll almost never see a truly dumb move to witness from the Artificial Intelligence. The naval battles, although a bit too complex for their own good, are very good looking and feel important and tough. The diplomacy manages to be a letdown only half of the time, with the other factions actually proposing some interesting treaties. The regional development model is clearly an improvement, as is the addition of technology that needs to be researched, rather than the progression system of the previous games, which was based on increasing the population and building a better castle or town. The game also manages to look better than ever, even if you can't run at the maximum graphics option.

The drawbacks are the high system requirements, that result, surprisingly, not in long load times for battles but in about a minute passing on my machine between turns and the crashes that people are reporting to be experiencing (Creative Assembly has promised and implemented an aggressive patching program). Another thing people seem to hold against Empire: Total War is its complexity. I can only say that I do not want to play videogames in a gaming world that does not value complexity in a strategy title but I see how the relatively limited level of information in the manual and in the tool tips could be an obstacle for some players.

One huge problem that any reviewer worth his/her salt needs to acknowledge is the Artificial Intelligence. I'll say again that it is better than in Medieval 2 and in Rome but it's still a huge letdown, especially considering what fans have heard from Creative Assembly during the development process. It fails to be truly tough in most tactical battles; it's rather coward on the strategic map, inept in diplomacy and cannot use navies to move armies around. But there are two things that it does well: going after cannons with cavalry and blocking trade routes.

That being said, you should buy this game if you like the series or if you liked the tactical battles from the Steam demo and you have a bit of patience with the A.I. and with potential crashes. Don't get it if you're looking for quick battles and little to no management on the strategic layer. Dawn of War II is probably more suited to you. Empire: Total War is for those gamers who like to ponder movements on the campaign map for a few minutes and who are ready to start campaigns that they will probably finish a few months later, playing two to three hours a night.

Street Fighter IV Gets Free Championship Mode, PC Version Announcement Soon New features incoming for the game

Fighting games have been around for quite some time, dominating the early days of arcades, times when titles such as Mortal Kombat or Tekken gained the huge number of fans they have today. But no other fighting franchise can boast the worldwide appeal that Capcom's Street Fighter series has won.

Not only has it received two motion pictures from Hollywood, but, thanks to the newest installment, Street Fighter IV, the franchise is once again on the mouths of every hardcore gamer out there. Seeing that is has already been launched for arcades in Japan and for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, PC gamers have been getting worried because Capcom hasn't revealed further details on the game arriving to their platform.

Now, thanks to the official Street Fighter IV Japanese blog, we have a date for the announcement of the release date. That's right, because of the big fanbase, Capcom has seen it fit to bring forth an announcement, saying that on May 1 we will be receiving some new details on when Street Fighter IV will arrive on the PC and what features it will have.

Speaking of features, the Famitsu Japanese gaming magazine has just informed that, on April 24, residents of the Land of the Rising Sun will be getting a brand new game mode entitled Championship, completely free. Headed to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, this new mode will allow people to view replays of battles crossplatform, but some features will only be present on either one of the consoles. PS3 users will be able to rate the replays of the battles, choosing from Funny and Beautiful to Awesome.

Xbox 360 users, on the other hand, will be getting a few more features with this new mode, as they will see the input keys of the players on screen during said replays and even get the chance to download them on the hard drive of the console or on the memory stick for offline viewing at a later time.

While some of those features could have been easily implemented on both of the platforms, it is nice that Capcom has decided to give fans more bragging rights with this game, which is based on the multiplayer mode.

DSi Sales Are Double Those of the DS Lite In the first two weeks

Nintendo is saying that, in its first week, the Nintendo DSi has sold more than 435,000 units in North America, which is pretty good considering that the previous model, the DS Lite, only sold around 226,000 units when it was initially put out in June 2006. That's almost double, and signals the fact that the DSi is shaping up to be one of the biggest hardware successes in the coming weeks and months.

Of course, Nintendo is not saying who are the people who have bought the DSi in such big numbers. It could be that those who have one of the original Nintendo DS consoles are now upgrading, because of the added cameras and because of the overall better hardware.

It could also be that people who are already owners of a Nintendo DS Lite are interested in getting a second handheld that would allow them to download new videogames via the Wi-Fi connection. There are also probably some new adopters, who see the Nintendo platform as a good mix between a gaming console and a picture-taking device.

Simple math shows that, if the rate of adoption is maintained, the DSi should boost overall sales for the Nintendo DS and could hand the Japanese hardware manufacturer another winner in the NPD hardware charts. The impact of the DSi will be influenced by the quality of the games delivered via the DSi Shop Channel and by the way developers will be able to take advantage of the twin cameras to create interesting and innovative gameplay.

If Nintendo manages to sell around 400,000 Nintendo DSi handhelds each week, then we could see around 16,000,000 of them sold by the end of 2009. If we take that number together with that of DS devices that are already used, then Nintendo could be close to putting one device in each house in North America by the end of 2010.
