Touch Pad + Mac Mini Concept

We've just come across another Mac mini mod, but this time it's only a concept. San Francisco artist Benjamin Harvey has thought up a Touch Pad that would make great friends with a Mac mini, eliminating the need of buying peripherals for the mini desktop computer. The TouchPad + Mac mini concept was posted by Harvey (SONofWRONG) via DeviantArt. Explaining that “instead of creating a full-fledged touch-capable Mac [Harvey] devised a touch input device that would be wirelessly paired to any Mac on your local network.” According to the designer, “the most ideal of situations would be to pair it with my redesigned version of the Mac mini, which doesn't come packaged with peripherals. Instead of buying a Bluetooth keyboard and Mighty Mouse, you could pick up a TouchPad,” Harvey asserts. The artist's comments further reveal that “like a giant iPod touch, the TouchPad supports multi-touch, an on-screen keyboard, and some streamlined OSX interface adjustments optimized for media, document processing, web browsing, and instant messaging. There's an iSight built in for iChat and Photo Booth that allows you to touch the screen to manipulate photos.”According to the concept, the image is in secure pairing mode, with the peripheral-pairing process being simplified. “Whenever the Mac mini is powered on, it searches for a nearby powered up TouchPad,” Harvey says, adding that “the Pad automatically boots to the pairing screen on which you'll select what flavor Mac you wish to pair with.” Users are prompted for a unique passcode, once the mouse is selected.“Each new Mac will ship with their own passcode printed in the product documentation,” the concept goes. If another Mac is detected, the TouchPad will alert its user to the presence of another system, allowing it to pair with the new computer as well.

Changewave - MacBook Sales Continue to Grow

Changewave Research has some interesting charts for the tech-focused,
revealing that Apple continues to have strong notebook sales (most likely thanks to the introduction of the unibody family), but not as strong desktop sales. However, while netbook sales continue to be on the rise for companies such as Acer, ASUS, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell, Changewave Research claims that Apple manages to fill this gap with its iPhone.“Within the weaker overall PC spending environment, Apple planned laptop purchases (30%) for the next 90 days have improved 3-pts since our previous survey in January,” says Changewave Research. “At the same time, planned desktop purchases (26%) have dipped 2-pts.,” the analysis goes (a graph complementing these assertions can be found below).

Review image

In contrast, “HP’s visibility appears steady going forward, with planned desktop purchases (28%) holding their outsized gains from the previous survey. Planned laptops (22%) have dipped 1-pt,” Changewave states. The research firm also claims that demand for netbooks remains firm, with its previous survey showing “low-cost, highly portable laptops with smaller screens - popularly known as Netbooks,” the company explains. According to Changewave, “[Netbooks] are one of the few beneficiaries of this tough spending environment. The latest results reinforce this finding.”“Among respondents who have bought a laptop in the past 90 days, 17% say it was a Netbook – better than one in every six laptops purchased during this time period,” Changewave figures have showed. “Looking ahead, 18% say the laptop they plan on buying in the next 90 days will be a Netbook – which is 4-pts higher than in January,” reads the PDF report.Interestingly, Changewave also notes that, while Acer, ASUS, Hewlett-Packard and Dell are the only ones leading the Netbook market, Apple may have indirectly tapped that market with its iPhone.“While Apple has shown little interest in pursuing this market to date, we note that some Apple users consider the iPhone to be a form of Netbook,” Changewave concludes

Get the Ultimate Comfort with the Nymbus Reading Lamp

Donell Hutson is an industrial design student with a fine arts background. He did not like very much the fact that light tends to spread in all directions when it should be focused, especially when it comes to reading. That's why he has come up with a very neat invention destined to put you in better control of the light beams when you're reading in the dark: the Nymbus Reading Lamp. If you're expecting something extraordinary, don't: the principle behind the Nymbus Reading Lamp is as simple as it gets and you'll most likely hit your forehead with your hand and cry the oh-so-common “why didn't I think about THAT before?” phrase. The Nymbus Reading Lamp is in fact an upside-down lamp that simply projects its light upwards. The feature that makes this lamp great is the mobile mirror attached to the lamp's body using a small and thin arm.

Make the light shine in the direction you want
Enlarge picture
The light comes from 5 LED bulbs that seem to be powerful enough to generate sufficient light allowing you to read in excellent conditions. They cast a light beam, which hits the small square mirror above them and all you have to do is rotate the mirror so it redirects the beam to a place of your choice – in this case, your book or papers. Now, the Nymbus Reading Lamp has a complete DIY construction and almost anyone with a bit of an engineering knack could make one in just tens of minutes. You could even use a small flashlight as light source and a tin can for shader. Add in some hard wire attached to a thicker aluminum foil you've previously glued the small mirror to and some tape to keep things together better and there you go – your own DIY Nymbus Reading Lamp.

A neat solution allowing you to read in good lighting conditions without disturbiung your room mates.

While being a very good solution in case you want to read without disturbing your room mates with excessive or badly-directed light, the Nymbus Reading Lamp can also make a nifty lighting gadget for your home, letting you direct light towards various objects and highlight/dim areas in your room. No mass production has been announced so far, but we'd certainly like to see the Nymbus Reading Lamp in stores. We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .

Acer Expects Netbook Market to Reach 30 Million Units in 2009

With the global market for small-sized, lightweight portable computer systems continuing to grow, leading netbook maker Acer is expecting that the market will reach 25-30 million units this year, while in 2010, shipments of 40-45 million units are estimated, according to a recent news-article published on Digitimes, citing Scott Lin, president of Acer Taiwan. The company, which is reported to have shipped the highest number of netbooks, last year, is expecting to further increase its market share, with the help of its recently announced 10-inch Aspire One, as well as some of its upcoming models.Scott Lin said that Acer was not planning to push the form factor over the 10-inch panel, keeping the system into a lightweight form factor, enabling the netbook to come to the market for an affordable price tag. However, Lin noted that netbooks had already impacted the market for 12-inch notebooks, one of the reasons why the company was not considering to launch netbooks with screen sizes over that of 10-inch.Apparently, Acer is expecting to ship between 7,000-8,000 units of its Aspire One netbooks per month in Taiwan, alone, with high hopes on the company's recently released 10.1-inch model. Acer will continue to sell its 8.9-inch Aspire One netbooks with plans for pricing and specification adjustments slated for the end of February or the beginning of March. In addition, Acer announced that it was aiming for a market share of 40-50%.Acer is one of the first PC makers to introduce a netbook to the market. The initial 8.9-inch Aspire One, based on Intel's Atom N270 processor, succeeded in getting everybody's attention, which enabled the company to record the highest number of netbook shipments last year, consequently topping its main competitor, netbook pioneer ASUS. The maker could be introducing more products based on the Atom processor in the near future.

Windows 7 Build 7048 Labeled Release Candidate 1 (RC1)

The first Release Candidate of Windows 7 is beginning to take contour. Following the availability of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 for the general public on January 10, 2009, and the discontinuation of all downloads on February 12, there has been nothing but complete radio silence from Microsoft on the development of the next iteration of Windows. Still, it is undeniable that the Redmond company is making consistent headway building Windows 7, and that the development process has already moved past the Beta stage to the Release Candidate branch. Leaked information from testers now reveals that Windows 7 Build 7048 carries the Release Candidate 1 (RC1) label.Various sources, especially enthusiasts on Windows-centric forums, indicate that a select pool of Microsoft testers have received Windows 7 Build 6.1.7048.winmain_win7rc1.090211-1625. Microsoft has yet to confirm or deny that, as at just a little over one month since the public launch of Windows 7 Beta it has started compiling builds of the operating system belonging to the RC branch. However, the version label associated with Windows 7 Build 7048 indeed suggests that the Redmond company has branched off winmain. At the same time, “090211-1625” indicates that Windows 7 Build 7048 was compiled on February 11, 2009, at 4:25 PM.Nevertheless, the leaked details on Windows 7 Build 7048 RC have to be taken with a grain of salt, as Microsoft has yet to unveil the actual naming scheme that will be associated with RC branch builds. Before Windows 7 Build 7048, testers leaked information and screenshots on Windows 7 Build 7032 (6.1.7032.0.winmain.090129-1812).But, for the time being, only the bits for Windows 7 Build 7022 are available for download in the wild, with the 32-bit flavor having been leaked to BitTorrent trackers. As far as Microsoft is concerned, mum's the word for the Windows 7 Release Candidate, which is reportedly planned for an April 2009 launch.

Remote computer management and monitoring has always been a handy tool for network administrators, giving them a palpable feel of the problem without skipping the comfort of the chair. Troubleshooting computer problems in a network can't always be done based on users' sayings as they tend to forget crucial aspects or simply deem them unimportant to mention.

So, having a clear look at the problem without even having to move from the office is always a well-off situation on both sides. VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is one of the best ways to achieve this, as it provides access to everything on the remote computer. But here arises another problem: we're talking about a network and there may be problems on more than one computer. A manager gathering all VNC connections under one roof allowing simultaneous view to different computer addresses sounds like a good choice.

SmartCode VNC Manager is a $118.75 solution for lazy or over-booked IT specialists that need a quick way to solve network users' problems fast and easy. The program can be tested to its fullest for a period of 14 days.

The interface is overwhelming with options and connection types and frankly, for this kind of money, I wouldn't have expected anything else. The suite includes built-in tools, wizards and external tools and these make for every utensil any network administrator would need to work from afar: device manager, event log manager, installed software manager, printer access, service manager, shutdown/reboot, task manager, remote command execution, registry editor access, ping tool or Windows computer manager.

Wizards section permit deploying VNC connections, resetting VNC passwords or generating SSH keys. As for External Tools, the area may seem under populated due to the presence of Ping, Traceroute and NBTSTAT instruments, but it isn't at all this shallow as it allows adding custom tools to the list, making it as rich as needed.

What is really beautiful about SmartCode VNC Manager is that it can automatically detect all the computers in the network regardless of their domain and it can scan them for VNC, RDP and SSH connections. Even more, this SmartCode VNC Manager brings a VNC deployment wizard that allows you to install the VNC clients on remote computers.

Once all supported remote control software installed and connections have been made, the administrator has the possibility to manage multiple computers at once. For better management, the application permits structuring the connections in registered groups for easy access and quick connection to remote machines. A glance is all you need to take at the list of registered computers to know exactly the VNC, RDP, SSH and Ping status, the VNC distribution used for the connection, SSH version, VNC, RDP, SSH and Telnet ports, MAC address, the last used IP logged on users and lots of other pieces of information that may come in handy at one time or another.

If there is a big number of registered connections, the application makes it easy finding a specific one by providing a quick search filter that supports separating items based on both name and IP address. So, it is really a cinch to find the desired connection.

In order to view the activity on the remote desktop, all computers must have installed one of the supported VNC servers: UltraVNC, TightVNC or RealVNC. This can be done beforehand manually on each station, but this is the hard way. As a network administrator, automatic deployment of the server on the remote computer is much more comfortable, less time consuming and extremely practical.

SmartCode VNC Manager features this option and if the machines have the necessary requirements, uninstalling and installing the software can be done from the administrator computer. The operation is completed silently and the user won't even notice all the background activity. Administrators get to make all the settings such as setting the connection as a service so that it is available at all times, connection password, enable video hooks, make performance settings so that the remote user can work undisturbed during verifications.

The deployment wizard is extremely easy to follow and all the settings are integrated in a nice looking interface that provides the desired options for making the VNC service invisible to the user. The only alert the user may get is from an anti-virus product but the alert can easily be added to the exceptions list.

A very useful option in SmartCode VNC Manager is screenshotting the server. In case there is something that needs further analysis, the administrator can take a picture of the server screen and save it as PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF or JPEG. But this is not all the manager offers, as the toolbar at the top of the application window is filled with handy tools that cover opening a file transfer window, chatting with the server, sending different key combos to the remote machine, disabling remote input (in case you do not want the user to see what you are doing), selecting the view mode (preserve aspect ratio, freefill) or open the view screen in a separate window. Out of all these, only sending Alt+Ctrl+Del to the server failed to work during our testing.

All these buttons can be customized by the administrator so that only the essential is kept (any of them are present under the “Actions” and “View” menus of the application). Also, for comfort and ease of use, the entire toolbar can be moved to any of the four edges of the interface.

The flexibility of this manager is not restricted to the avalanche of tools and options made available but it is extended by the actual VNC software it supports and one possibility is viewing the remote computer via HTTP connection, straight from your browser. This allows seeing the activity on the server from absolutely any computer in the LAN as long as Java is present on the machine. All you need is the IP and the HTTP port the connection has to be made through. Of course, the password is also a required ingredient for a successful task.

Support for Native Windows 7 Mobile Broadband

With Windows 7, Microsoft is gearing up to kick the operating system's mobile connectivity capabilities to the next level. The next iteration of the Windows client brings to the table a range of mobile broadband enhancements, which will see a strong support from a variety of Microsoft partners. The Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona acted as the stage for more than just Windows Mobile-focused announcements, as Microsoft also made public a line-up of partners that had already pledged to support the native Windows 7 mobile broadband enhancements.According to Microsoft, the following companies are ready to make sure that Windows 7 is embraced seamlessly by mobile broadband connections: Acer, Asus, Birdstep Technology, Dell, Ericsson, HP, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Huawei Communications Technologies, Option, Qualcomm, Sierra Wireless, Smith Micro, T-Mobile International and ZTE.“Windows 7’s Mobile Broadband enhancements give people a more reliable way to connect to the Internet using a wireless modem. Taking advantage of this feature is just like connecting to any other wireless network, and is done using the View Available Networks feature,” Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team, revealed.Microsoft initially demoed Windows 7 Mobile Broadband at the Windows hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles in early November 2008. And even at that time these partners were ready to jump aboard, since Sierra Wireless revealed that it would offer support for the enhancements since that particular moment. Via Windows 7 Mobile, Broadband users of the operating system will be able to take advantage of mobile broadband services turning to nothing more than the View Available Networks feature.“A consistent experience for customers on top of a common infrastructure for partners to build off of enables several benefits including lower support, maintenance, deployment and management costs. It also allows partners to focus on higher-end services instead of having to focus on basic connectivity development,” LeBlanc added.

Windows SDKs Available for Download and Order

As a rule, Microsoft is offering tools and resources designed for developers to build applications on top of Windows client and Server operating systems via the Download Center. However, Microsoft has taken the measure of offering the latest Windows Software Development Kits through an alternative channel that rules out a connection to the Internet and the download process. The Redmond company has partnered with a new vendor, which is supplying previously released Windows SDKs and Platform SDKs almost for free. Users ordering the SDKs from Paragon Media will only pay for the costs of the shipping and handling, as the actual software development kits are free.“Currently, Paragon is making the Windows SDK for Windows Server and .NET Framework 3.5 and the Windows SDK Update for Windows Vista and .NET Framework 3.0 available at Mssdk Orderport for the cost of a shipping and handling fee. Soon, some additional SDK releases will be available at the same location. Although Windows SDK releases are typically available on the Microsoft Download Center for at least two years, ordering a DVD can be a good option for customers who do not have access to the Internet or customers who have difficulty downloading the SDK due to limited Internet bandwidth,” said Lisa Supinski, Group Manager, Windows SDK team.
Back in March 2007, Microsoft offered the last release of Windows Software Development Kit Update for Windows Vista 6.0. Since then, the company has moved forward with the evolution of its Windows SDK, and offered Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 which also covers Windows Vista SP1 (Service Pack 1). Following the release of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000, the software giant also made available resources for developers looking to get a jump start in adapting their applications to the next version of Windows with Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

Windows SDK Update for Windows Vista and .NET Framework 3.0 is available for download here.

Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 can be downloaded from here.

Google Chrome 2.0.160.0 Gets “Obama”

Having launched its own breed of open source browser in late 2008, Google is already hard at work cooking version 2.0, as it has already signed off and made Chrome 1.0 available to the general public. Moving onward with the development of Chrome, the Mountain View search giant is taking a variety of aspects of the browser to the next level, including the spell check dictionary. In this context, one of the terms added to Google Chrome 2.0.160.0 is “Obama,” for the current president of the United States.“The spellchecker built into Chromium can be a big help in keeping your blog, email, documents, and forum postings spelled correctly and easy to read. Chromium integrates the popular open source library Hunspell with WebKit's built-in spellchecking infrastructure to check words and to provide suggestions in 27 different languages,” revealed Brett Wilson and Siddhartha Chattopadhyay, Google Software Engineers.Wilson and Chattopadhyay indicated that Google, with its massive, some may say even monopolist, reach over the Internet is best positioned to catalyze the addition of new terms to resources such as Hunspell. In this regard, the Google translation team landed a helping hand by identifying collections of words in different languages with a high level of popularity. Google subsequently identified no less than 1,000 words which were not featured in the dictionary. The Mountain View search giant indicated that the linguistic work it had done was available to anyone interested under GPL/LGPL/MPL tri-license agreements.
“The recent dev-channel release of Google Chrome (2.0.160.0) has the additional words we generated for 19 of the languages. Hopefully, you'll see fewer common words marked as misspelled. For example, the English dictionary now includes 'antivirus,' 'anime,' 'screensaver,' and 'webcam,' and commonly used names such as 'BibTeX,' 'Mozilla,' 'Obama,' and 'Wikipedia.' For our scientific users, we even have 'gastroenterology,' 'oligonucleotide,' and 'Saccharomyces',” Wilson and Chattopadhyay added.
Google Chrome 2.0 is available for download here.

Email, e-mail or eMail, however you may prefer to call it, has been around since the beginning of the Internet era and is now, understandably, even taken for granted. The protocol for sending emails, SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), became an Internet Standard 10 since 1982. Early emails were composed using the ASCII character set and we all know what they look like today. Photos, sounds, animations, videos or virtually any file format out there can be attached to an email and safely arrive, in a matter of minutes, to its destination.

Expecting it to just work, we rarely think about the technology behind it and the constant struggle to deliver e-mails almost in real time, while keeping inboxes as clean as possible. That being said, I think we will all agree that e-mail is a great and extremely useful technology these days. And for that reason we decided to review the very backbone of your e-mail addiction: an e-mail server. We chose a product created by the well-known Romanian company Gecad Technologies – some of you may remember their popular RAV AntiVirus solution that was sold to Microsoft back in 2003. Since then, Gecad refocused on providing new, revolutionary messaging platforms under the name AXIGEN.

The AXIGEN Mail Server comes in four "flavors": Business Edition, Enterprise Edition, Service Provider Edition and the Office Edition, which is completely free. Each of the aforementioned editions is scaled according to customer needs, and the prices range from approximately 275 Euros with 25 mailboxes to 2930 Euros for the full-blown, 5000 mailboxes – ISP edition. However, if your company needs more than 10,000 mailboxes, AXIGEN can provide you with such large scale solutions too.

Installation

Being accompanied by comprehensive documentation, the AXIGEN Mail Server installation is a pretty straightforward process and can be done by almost anybody, provided they have at least some base Linux terminal knowledge, as it needs su privileges. And knowing that this product is mainly for IT professionals, the command-line installation is as easy as it can be. Leaving that aside, it is also very fast and you will be ready to configure your settings in no more, probably less, than two minutes. After the install process is finished, the services won't start automatically, as you must do the initial configuration: setting the admin password, primary domain, SMTP and POP3 interfaces etc. Fast forward, and you are ready to start your mail server, but not before shutting down other web or mail services (Apache, Sendmail, Postfix, IMAPD, Dovecot) that could interfere with AXIGEN. That being done, simply run the following two commands "sudo /etc/init.d/axigen start" and "sudo /etc/init.d/axigenfilters start" and you have a working mail server ready to be further tweaked to your needs using the simple, clean and efficient web interface.

The Web Interface

After typing in the password, you enter the WebAdmin panel and everything is exactly where you would expect it to be. The left pane displays all the categories, the middle pane shows the settings for the selected subcategory, and on the right, Contextual Help is available for quick understanding of what's going on in that page. Also, in the upper-right hand corner of the interface, a "Home" icon will appear if you leave the first page. Near it, a useful "Contact Support" link will accompany you on every screen, facilitating a quick access to assistance.

The first category is "Global settings" in which you can view your Primary Domain and the SSL Random File. Under that, another panel will display license information like the numbers of machines and mailboxes that are managed, the Tech Support provider, currently installed addons and other details regarding the limitations of the license you bought.

The Services category is where you start, stop, restart and configure all of AXIGEN's mail services (POP3, IMAP, SMTP, etc.). The very thorough configuration subcategories allow you to customize your server to the finest details. A simple Log Level slider exists in almost all settings pages and will instruct AXIGEN to either log everything or only critical events. The Flow control will allow you to limit the number of simultaneous connections and the maximum connections per x seconds, minutes, hours or days. Error control will close sessions after a number of invalid commands received from clients or failed authentication attempts. This number can range from 0 to 100. There is also support for the StartTLS technology – a quality Encryption and Authentication method and Thread Management for normal or overload situations. You can even set the Greeting message for the POP3 and IMAP services. Another "safety net" provided by AXIGEN is Email Loop Protection that will reject emails that have more than "X" received headers.
Review image

The Domains & Accounts control panel is pretty self-explanatory, letting you manage your domains, accounts, groups, mailing lists, public folders and account classes. A nifty feature that you'll come across when adding a new account, group, mailing list or account class for multi-domain servers comes in the form of an autocomplete field that will filter domains while you type, saving precious time or just helping you through a memory lapse.

Security and Filtering

With huge amounts of spam, malware and viruses coming 24/7 from all over the world, the true power of a mail server solution might just stand in its ability to filter out these pests constantly while still allowing legit emails to get through. AXIGEN is able to work with several applications to address these issues. Support for SpamAssassin, AVG, AVAST, ClamAV, Commtouch, amavis is available, along with the more generic aximilter interface, which enables connecting to even more security or filtering products. All these solutions will attempt to clean infected emails and if that's not possible it's your choice what to do next. You can either still deliver them, move them to trash or just discard them. The same goes for emails marked as suspicious. The AntiSpam configuration features two 0-10 thresholds with 0 meaning not spam and 10 being spam. After receiving a score from SpamAssasin, the messages will either be sent to the SPAM folder or deleted, according to the readout on the threshold. For example, if you set the "move to spam" threshold at 5 and the "delete" threshold at 8, all messages that get a 5 or higher score will be moved to the spam folder and those with an 8 or higher score will automatically be deleted. Very, very helpful and so easy. Of course, you can always integrate your favorite AntiVirus solutions and create Whitelists and Blacklists for specific addresses. Other anti-spam methods include country filtering (in collaboration with MaxMind geolocation service), Sender Policy Framework, Domain Keys, DNS BlackLists and DNS Check.

Status and Monitoring

AXIGEN Mail Server offers a comprehensive reporting service and has the ability to create charts for an easy overview of the server's load and activity. You can enable SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and add listeners for it, collect domain and domain object data (with the option of renewing samples at an interval ranging from 0 to 848 weeks) and set the logging level.

When creating a new chart, you are asked to name it and add it to an existing group, or create a new one. Next, set the start/end time and dates, choose the data you want to be used, play around with the colors if you don't like the default ones and that's it. It will start monitoring and you can, at any time, download the collected data summary either as a CSV or an XML file.

The storage chart will give you a quick look at how much space is being used, but you can also view a detailed version of it, which provides more in-depth information. Note that AXIGEN Mail Server will only use what it needs to use, with an auto-expanding storage size (of course, within the limits imposed by you).

In the logging subcategory you can decide whether you want to separate service logs or centralize them in a single file. You can also view saved logs (.txt extension) right from the interface.

Migration and Back-up

AXIGEN offers automatic and manual migration solutions through IMAP. All domains, accounts and mailboxes from any mail server platform can be migrated seamlessly; it will even copy the server's login credentials and create an exact replica of it. You simply cannot ask for a simpler tool.
Review image

The AXIGEN team also included a complete Back-up & Restore function (with flow, error and thread controls) facilitating full or partial restores and both offline and online backups. This service can also be accessed from more than one location, giving administrators the ability to set access rules for specific IPs. Advanced clustering support with multi-tier setups, LDAP authentication and routing, SMTP routing to back-end, POP3 & IMAP WebMail proxies and integration with the RH Cluster Suite are also available.
Review image

End-users are also sure to have a great experience using AXIGEN's email services with features like:

· Localized WebMail clients
· Mobile WebMail
· Personal organizer
· Address book
· Multiple skins
· Printer friendly emails
· Out-of-office messages and much more.

The Good

Fast installation and configuration, quick understanding of all the functions under a very clean and efficient Webadmin interface and a plethora of settings that can be tweaked are some of AXIGEN Mail Server's strong points. Add those to stability, almost unbeatable security and great overall performance and you get this high-class mail server solution.

The Bad

Newer Linux distributions are not fully supported. The AXIGEN mail server refused to start automatically at bootup on Ubuntu 8.10, which was released quite a while ago. But this is definitely not a huge problem and, knowing that Gecad updates the server quite often, I'm sure this bug will be addressed in no time.

The Truth

Whether you are an admin or an end-user, working with or under AXIGEN's mail server is bound to make you a lot more efficient and a lot less worried. Yet another great product from a company worthy of its reputation

Little Wizard 1.2.2
Enlarge picture
I've always wanted to present an educational product, one intended especially for children in primary school because, that way, I would contribute to making the learning process just a tad better for some. And by better I mean more fun, with less stress associated with it and, why not, a real pleasure.

Well, now that I have this opportunity, I will tell you about the most user-friendly development environment you ever set your eyes upon, an IDE especially designed for children. Although far less powerful than the usual programming environments, Little Wizard is just what a kid needs to be introduced to, if s/he is to regard learning how a computer program is crafted as something fun.

Little Wizard's job is indeed a difficult one, and that’s mainly because of two reasons. First off, children tend to become bored extremely fast, and I'm sure we can all agree on that - so it's fair to say that you can't really make a child do something, let alone enjoy it, if that thing doesn't profoundly arouse her/his interest. Any school teacher can confirm that boredom among pupils is one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of an effective learning experience – so, to put it simply, there has to be something that, even if harder to grasp at first, dons a very user-friendly wrapper. The second reason is that computer programming is a field that is fundamentally difficult to comprehend. I don't want to analyze here what it takes to be a skilled developer, but trust me, it takes both time and effort, and to become an expert, well, let's just say it's hard to get there.

Then, is it possible to put together these two conflicting aspects and yet come up with something that's worth anything? The answer is yes, as Little Wizard is one of the most nicely implemented educational software I have seen. Although it's relatively straightforward, having no complicated commands or too complex concepts to deal with, it's certainly not a toy. I mean, it's true that in terms of user interface it has little in common with the more technical, real development environments, being very cute, with little animations all over, and a truly well made interface. Nevertheless, it's a serious application when it comes to its offerings.

When I first started using Little Wizard and saw that it was designed to teach kids, I thought there was no need for me to waste my time reading the tutorial, as I felt confident on my small programming background to help me get started quickly. However, in the first ten minutes or so, I literally felt overwhelmed with the multitude of tabs, small pictures of a little clown (which, after a while, I realized was the actual “little wizard”) and various other aspects. I was only familiar with the math tab, which contains all the digits and operations (both the basic ones such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, and the slightly more advanced concatenation or logical operations), and with the loop&conditions tab, including basic clauses such as if, else, for, while, repeat-until, break and continue.

With some guilt that I could not even get how to use a children's application, I began going through the tutorial, in order to understand how to start using its full potential. The conclusion I reached was that this is a software that a teacher has to learn thoroughly, and only afterwards can he introduce it to his pupils, because it does not offer any documentation whatsoever about how a computer program is structured, its core concepts and fundamental issues. It skips all that, and begins by briefly describing the program UI, and then gets right to how the commands are used. For me, and for anyone who has written and complied a program at least once, it was really easy. However, I think that. for someone who is new at this, getting used to it would be a real problem. Therefore, for those who want to start learning programming on their own, I have to recommend first a reading on the fundamental issues.

I may have been a little to drastic above, but that’s because I suppose no one with absolutely no background in this area would venture using Little Wizard, so it will probably be a good experience for most that do. Now, let's see exactly what this tool is about and in what circumstances it may prove to be the optimum choice.

Little Wizard is a drag and drop development environment with a top priority to be as eye-pleasing and user-friendly, while offering as many of the facilities of a regular IDE as possible. The first thing you should know right from the start is that you'll probably never have to touch the keyboard, as everything you add to the program is done solely by using the mouse. For example, if you want to make a short loop to print all the numbers between 1 and 10, you have to first select a variable and assign it the value of 1, then drag down a loop clause (like while or for), open a logical block (a curly bracket, like so {), print the variable's value (which is done here by putting the create wand and the variable name next to each other), increment the variable (x = x + 1), and then close the logical block (}). Of course, there are other ways to do this, by using more specialized clauses, such as for, which increments the variable automatically with whichever step you desire (not necessarily 1 like in the previous example).

The Good

As I said before, Little Wizard has a real tough mission, that of combining a kid's need for something s/he deems intriguing, with the tedious work of studying computer programming. From my point of view, which might not be the most accurate one, it does a pretty good job at it, having a nice childish interface and various other features that kids can relate to.

The Bad

Having to constantly drag and drop figures out of the palette and into the program grid, especially if you want to create a larger program, may become a little tiring after a while. However, the most bugging aspect is removing pieces of program, as you have to select each separately, and drag it upwards in the palette. Also, there is no tool for selecting more than one item at a time, so to modify a program, you have to replace each item with the new one. This can definitely be seen as a downside since, when programming is first learnt, changes occur very often with your program as you experiment with various techniques and code statements.

The Truth

Overall, Little Wizard is an application that may prove to be satisfying for many school teachers in search for something additional to the main course (I can't say with certainty because I haven't had the opportunity to see it in real action, meaning, with kids working in it). I for one have enjoyed it because Little Wizard allows you to do a little more than just programming – an aspect I intentionally left out for you to experiment on your own. Have fun!

Internet Explorer 8 RTW Now Weeks Away, in March 2009

The gold version of Internet Explorer 8 is now but weeks away, as the RTW (release to web) deadline is set for March 2009. Following the availability of Release Candidate 1 of Internet Explorer 8 at the end of January 2009, Microsoft confirmed that it had offered the last development milestone ahead of the final version of the browser. However, the Redmond company was mute, and continues to offer no indication as to when it plans to release IE8 to web. Still, the software giant's own actions, as well as independent reports, reveal that IE8 RTW will indeed be launched in March 2009.TechARP reveals that it has received conformation of Microsoft plans to wrap up IE8 for general availability in the coming weeks. The Redmond company is reportedly looking to the final two weeks in March 2009 for the release of IE8. At the same time, it appears that the software giant will finalize all the details associated with the launch of IE8 RTW, including the schedule and language versions by March 5, 2009.There are additional details that make an IE8 RTW release plausible, in addition to leaked information. Microsoft will only offer unlimited installation and usage support for the pre-release versions of Internet Explorer 8 (on Windows Vista and Windows) until no later than March 31, 2009, according to the official support page for the browser. Microsoft has already pushed back this date several times, but only as it planned to unveil new development milestones of IE8, namely Beta 2 and RC. However, at this point in time, there is no additional development Build except RTW.Moreover, in the second half of March 2009, Microsoft will host its MIX conference. The web-centric MIX09 will start on March 18, in Las Vegas and will end on March 20. The event has traditionally been focused on Internet Explorer and web-related technologies and services from Microsoft. In fact, at MIX09 in March 2009, Microsoft will release Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1. Although it's all speculation at this time, it will not come as a surprise if the software giant releases Internet Explorer 8 to web at MIX09.Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is available for download here.

Windows Sysinternals for Windows 7 Beta and RC Branch Builds

In parallel with the evolution of the Windows operating system from Windows Vista to Windows 7, the ecosystem of hardware products and software solutions orbiting around the operating system is also moving forward. And Microsoft's own products make no exception to this rule. In fact, one of the most popular suites of Windows tools has been tailored to Windows 7, following the availability of the public Beta milestone of the next iteration of the Windows client, namely Build 7000.
According to the Redmond company, Windows Sysinternals, after the latest update suffered by the suite, now integrate seamlessly with Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 and later development milestones, namely the builds belonging to the Release Candidate branch. “Windows Sysinternals utilities help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and applications. A variety of file and disk, security, networking, system information, process discovery and miscellaneous utilities are available; utilities that work on Windows Vista have been updated for use on Windows 7 beta,” Microsoft stated.Essentially, what Microsoft is saying is that if a Windows Sysinternals component worked with Windows Vista, it will also work with Windows 7 Beta. The company debuted Beta downloads of Win 7 on January 10, 2009, and completely discontinued serving the bits on February 12. Windows 7 has long since moved past the Beta milestone toward the RC milestone, and is up to Build 7032.At the start of February, three specific Windows Sysinternals tools were updated, including: “Process Explorer v11.33 - this update fixes a bug where the history graph tooltips could display the wrong data point and reduces the memory footprint of the structures that store graph history. Autoruns v9.39 - this Autoruns update fixes a couple of minor bugs and adds a new Windows 7 location. ZoomIt v3.02 - this release addresses a bug that could cause Zoomit to refuse to enter drawing mode once zoomed,” a member of the Windows Sysinternals team said.

The Windows Sysinternals Suite is available for download here.

Mission One, Motor Power fastest in the World

Motorcycle technology purely as a source of electrical energy progressively developed. Result, the performance of this motor type can be more powerful and rival versions of racing engines that use gasoline. That is the Mission Motors, a small company from San Francisco, California, with the electric sportbike, One Mission.Despite not yet produced, the company is directly mengklaimnya as the fastest electric motorcycle in the world. The ability dibanggakan, dikebut he can reach the speed 240 km / hour. Other violence, the electric motor used as driving a motorcycle is the torsi 13.8 kgf-m at zero rpm.Mission Capabilities One of the last will not be able ditandingi motorcycle engines that rely on gasoline. In fact, with torsi great that you can start running when the motor or the gas grip track, it is directly 'ngacir'.

Without clutch
By using the electric motor, the operation of the motorcycle, the procedure is so simple. Motorcycle, this need not be equipped with the clutch again. Although still equipped with the transmission, it has only one acceleration. Consequently, pengendaranya ribet not need to replace the gear-change when the entry and exit from the junction. Want to slow, with enough grip mengendorkan gas, and when tancap again, grip gas drawn again. That is the intensity of this electric sportbike.Other features that dibanggakan motor and made the symbol of the future is zero emission plus appearance of votes will become the new icon. With something special, electric sportbike this appearance is far more 'clean' compared to conventional motor gasoline plant. No less interesting, especially for those working in the field of IT (information technology), Mission One can also as a vehicle to apply the new knowledge and skills. The motor is equipped with a data acquisition system and can be connected to the laptop without using cables. With this rate, motor behavior during dikebut directly and can be downloaded (download) directly to the computer. So if you want to work atiknya to fit the style mengendara the owner, we do not need to rely on key UK and screwdriver. Simply use the laptop. Sip a! These features have a very dibanggakan Mission Motors perdananya on this product.

Without thunder
First time to see this motor, kesannya is culun or too clean. Bodi terbungkus cleanly without protrusion. On the side and back, no muffler that mencuat. Such is the intensity of this electric motor. Source of energy, drive, and transmission and can be packed with neat. Not need refrigeration, such as machinery used motorcycles in general at this time.Other characteristics, this motor does not cause noise dikebut though exhausted. For those with motor racing, or Harley, this is of course so awkward. There is no 'greng' his character and thus made of. Persisnya, Mission One race without the roar!More solid again, according to Mission Motors, the electric motor on, and how the cost of care more affordable and easy. The motor does not require the replacement of oil, spark plugs, valve set, and so on.Sportbike because electricity has not been so popular, Mission Motors seeks interest to adopt the Username with engineering and motor racing in Mission One. This is seen in the background Suspensi monoshock. In fact, shock reducer, both front and rear, dipilihkan Ohlins commonly used in motor racing. Even the components are made use Brembo.
With limited production, which is still new technology, plus using quality assured components such as those mentioned above, result in price so this motor is very expensive. When introduced, Mission Motors offer price 68,995 U.S. dollas per unit or with the same Rp 815,865,875. If you are like this, only the terentu who can afford it. Therefore, also, produced a limited version of 50 units only. For those who want it, the unit also received next year.
