Get the Ultimate Comfort with the Nymbus Reading Lamp

Donell Hutson is an industrial design student with a fine arts background. He did not like very much the fact that light tends to spread in all directions when it should be focused, especially when it comes to reading. That's why he has come up with a very neat invention destined to put you in better control of the light beams when you're reading in the dark: the Nymbus Reading Lamp. If you're expecting something extraordinary, don't: the principle behind the Nymbus Reading Lamp is as simple as it gets and you'll most likely hit your forehead with your hand and cry the oh-so-common “why didn't I think about THAT before?” phrase. The Nymbus Reading Lamp is in fact an upside-down lamp that simply projects its light upwards. The feature that makes this lamp great is the mobile mirror attached to the lamp's body using a small and thin arm.

Make the light shine in the direction you want

The light comes from 5 LED bulbs that seem to be powerful enough to generate sufficient light allowing you to read in excellent conditions. They cast a light beam, which hits the small square mirror above them and all you have to do is rotate the mirror so it redirects the beam to a place of your choice – in this case, your book or papers. Now, the Nymbus Reading Lamp has a complete DIY construction and almost anyone with a bit of an engineering knack could make one in just tens of minutes. You could even use a small flashlight as light source and a tin can for shader. Add in some hard wire attached to a thicker aluminum foil you've previously glued the small mirror to and some tape to keep things together better and there you go – your own DIY Nymbus Reading Lamp.

A neat solution allowing you to read in good lighting conditions without disturbiung your room mates.

While being a very good solution in case you want to read without disturbing your room mates with excessive or badly-directed light, the Nymbus Reading Lamp can also make a nifty lighting gadget for your home, letting you direct light towards various objects and highlight/dim areas in your room. No mass production has been announced so far, but we'd certainly like to see the Nymbus Reading Lamp in stores. We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed.
